A Local’s Ultimate Acadia National Park Elopement Guide
Why Acadia Is Such a Special Place to Elope
Acadia is such a special place. Period. Add in one of the most meaningful transitions of your life, and it becomes even more special. There are few places in the world, let alone on the East Coast, where mountains meet sea. There’s this epic contrast of rugged cliffy coastline, fairytale-like moss + pine forests, peaceful + quiet beaches, and impressive granite mountains - all within a mile (or even less!) of each other in some cases. So if you’re looking for awe-inspiring scenery, Acadia really can’t be beat!
In addition to the natural beauty of this land, Acadia is also unique in terms of National Parks - it’s not one huge isolated wilderness area; instead, it sprawls over Mount Desert Island, the Schoodic Peninsula, and Isle Au Haut and is very much intertwined with the local communities. That means you can feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere on a hike, but then have just a 10 minute drive into town to get lunch. This unique attribute of Acadia makes it the perfect place for couples looking to have an adventurous and low-stress - or even luxury - elopement! You can have the epic, National Park adventures without sacrificing a convenient and comfortable place to stay and fancy meals out. In fact, there are several cafes and restaurants here on Mount Desert Island that cater specifically to couples eloping or having intimate weddings in Acadia!
As someone who lives here on the island with Acadia National Park almost literally in my backyard, I’m fortunate to be able to experience this juxtaposition of epic nature and quaint community on the daily, and let me tell you - it really is something special. To be able to grab a latte and breakfast overlooking the harbor, then hike the iconic Cadillac Mountain and get sweeping views over the Atlantic and the outer islands, and then to do dinner in Bar Harbor and stroll around downtown…it’s absolute bliss. You’d think living here and experiencing it on the daily might make the magic wear off a bit, but it totally doesn’t; I’m still in awe all the time that this place exists, that I get to call it home, and that I get to help others experience the magic of it for themselves!
Why Couples Choose to Elope in Acadia
Okay so now we know what makes Acadia so special; let’s talk more about why couples choose it specifically for eloping!
Epic scenery without extreme hiking
Much of Acadia’s beauty can be seen and experienced via very short strolls! For example, one of the most popular elopement spots in Acadia, Otter Cliff, is accessible via a very short walk from a parking lot - you cross the street and walk down a path for 2 minutes and there you are, on one of the tallest cliffs rising 110 feet from the Atlantic, overlooking other iconic Acadia locations like the Beehive and Sand Beach. You can even drive up Cadillac Mountain to experience the first sun on the east coast or to watch the sunset, which often seems to go on forever. All the photos below are from spots that require little to no hiking!
Incredible sunrise and sunset spots
I’ve already touched on this briefly, but being an island means we get both amazing sunrises and sunsets. Many couples choose to take advantage of my “split coverage” option so they can experience both the quiet of the sunrise and the excitement of the sunset on their elopement day in Acadia.
Huge variety of landscapes in small area
Acadia really has it all - mountains, crashing ocean waves, dramatic cliffs, quiet lakes/ponds, sand and cobbestone beaches, wildflower meadows, cute coastal towns…like where else are you going to find all that?! All on an island only 108 square miles big. That means you don’t have to choose between a mountaintop elopement or a beach elopement - you can have both on the same day.
Family-friendly accessibility
Okay this is one of my favorite things about Acadia - it is SO family-friendly! There are a massive number of sights throughout the park that require little to no hiking that give you and your family the most beautiful Maine views, from moody cliffs to sweeping mountaintops. And Mount Desert Island in general is super family-friendly! You’ll find lots and lots of cafes, restaurants, and activities you can go to/do with the whole family (the furry family members too! We’re super dog-friendly here!).
Options to elevate an elopement
Honestly, there are a million ways to enhance your elopement day and I looooove brainstorming what would be most “you”! Here are some ideas to give you a little Acadia elopement inspiration!
canoeing or kayaking on the Acadia ponds/lakes
private sailing charters through Somes Sound (the only fjord on the US East Coast!)
picnics (luxury or keep it casual!)
family dinners
barefoot beach ceremonies
slow mornings together at the Airbnb
private plane flight over the island
rock climbing to your ceremony spot (for the really adventurous!)

When to Elope in Acadia
I live here year round, so I know the seasons and the changes they bring intimately. I also truly love every season here in Acadia and on Mount Desert Island as a whole; there are benefits to each (yes, even the winter!). Here are my thoughts on why you might choose to elope in each of the different seasons here in Acadia:
Spring
For the purposes of this guide, let’s call April through mid-June “spring” in Acadia; March still very much feels like winter!
quieter (except for Memorial Day Weekend)
foggy/moody, especially in the mornings
fresh greens (starting in mid-May)
unpredictable weather (we get a lot of moody days, which are beautiful in photos)
Summer
I consider summer to be mid-June through August. This is our busy season, and for good reason! It’s our reward for enduring our long, cold Maine winter hah!
lush and vibrant
busiest season
sunrise is best for crowds/light (I promise you won’t regret getting up early!)
all restaurants are open
Fall
September through mid-November is what I’d consider fall here. September’s weather is near perfect! Then October has stunning foliage (and some crowds to come with it!), and then November is the beginning of stick season, but not yet snowy/icy (usually…).
foliage
crisp weather
very high demand for eloping couples
restaurants start to close (especially after Indigenous Peoples’ Day)
Winter
Our longest season, winter! So, so underrated! From mid-November to March, Acadia is so quiet, so peaceful, so stunningly beautiful.
peaceful
snowy/cozy possibilities
limited access in some areas, but still tons of gorgeous spots accessible!
Sunrise vs Sunset Elopements in Acadia
Most of the couples I talk to know they want to experience sunset in Acadia, but I actually recommend prioritizing sunrise, especially for a more intimate, private experience. Yes, we get incredible sunsets here in Acadia, but the sunrises here are underrated! There are so many more people (like soooooo many more) watching sunsets than sunrises. You’re going to be competing with sunset-watchers for space if you choose sunset for your ceremony in the most popular locations. And honestly, that’s totally fine for many couples! Other park visitors are typically very courteous when they see someone is getting married and will give you space, but it won’t be this private experience (at least during summer and fall). The colors that light up the sky during sunset here is quite special - I totally understand why people choose it over and over, and…
Sunrises in Acadia are super special - for a large portion of the year, we get the first sunrise in the entire US! The lighting so soft and beautiful just before and after sunrise, crowds are minimal (even at the most popular locations), things are quiet, peaceful, there is this certain feeling of reverence that just doesn’t exist during other times of day (at least for me). Sunrise elopements just give you more space for you as a couple. And then, take a nap! We can reconvene later in the day - at sunset even! - for more elopement day adventures!
That’s actually what I truly recommend - a split coverage day! My favorite elopement days start with sunrise with just my couple, a break midday, and then meeting back up later in the day (maybe with additional family members!) for some fun sunset adventures! That’s what my husband and I did during our Acadia elopement and I loooooved having the middle of the day to rest, swim in our little cove near our Airbnb, and have some slow family time in between our planned elopement activities/ceremony. Plus, it stretches out the specialness of the day!
Do You Need a Permit to Elope in Acadia?
Yes, maybe! Elopements with 10 people or less do not require permits, so skip right over this section if your group is smaller than 10!
Acadia-specific special use permit
If you have more than 10 people at your elopement or intimate wedding (including you, your partner, your officiant, and your photographer), you will need a permit for getting married/holding a ceremony in Acadia National Park. Good news, though, it’s easy to get one! You simply choose your location and then mail in your permit (which you can download here right on Acadia’s website.
Marriage License
Maine residents: you must apply in the town/city where you live. The license is valid anywhere in Maine for 90 days from the date the intentions are filed.
Out-of-state residents: you can apply in any town/city in Maine. The license is valid for a ceremony performed anywhere in Maine for a period of 90 days from the date the intentions are filed. Most of my couples apply in Bar Harbor and you can start that process here.
How to Plan an Acadia Elopement Timeline
This is where your photographer will really help guide you to create the elopement day of your dreams! There are so many different ways a wedding day in Acadia or on Mount Desert Island can go, and I work with my couples to learn what’s most important to them, what activities feel the most “them”, their energy levels, their guests’ accessibility restrictions, and the general vibe they’re looking for for their special day. I have a couple sample timelines here to give you an idea of what your day could look like!
Some more add-on ideas for your Acadia elopement:
sunrise hike + brunch
split-day coverage (get sunrise and sunset - my favorite option!)
family ceremony at sunset
canoe adventure + private vows
sailing charter + cliff ceremony
The mix and match options are truly endless and I absolutely adore guiding my couples to choosing a day that is just perfect for them!
Tips for Eloping in Acadia With Family or Kids
Some of my favorite elopement days have included kids and other family members, and it’s a passion of mine to help couples bringing families have the best day! As I mentioned before, Acadia is extremely family-friendly and accessible. You can read my full blog post about eloping with kids in Acadia here, and here’s a quick rundown:
Choose your location wisely
Acadia is full of epic spots, but not every overlook or trail is baby or granparent-friendly. When choosing locations, consider:
Accessibility: Shorter hikes/flat paths
Space to play: Beaches, tide pools, and meadows allow kids to move around safely while you take a few moments for photos
Safety: Rocky ledges or slippery spots can be tricky
Support: Consider bringing along another family member or friend to help keep an eye on your kid(s) during important moments like your ceremony
Build a Flexible Timeline
Plan your day in blocks instead of a strict schedule, leaving space for:
Snack breaks and meals
Nap or rest times
Time to explore and play
Weather adjustments or unexpected delays
Bring the Right Gear
Packing the right gear can make a huge difference (as you know, for every outing with kids!):
Comfortable shoes and layers for everyone (it can get cool, even in the summer)
Snacks, snacks, and more snacks, water, and a small first-aid kit
Blankets or jackets for sitting outdoors
A carrier or stroller for toddlers if you’ll be walking longer distances
Involve Your Kids (or Other Family) in Your Day
Encourage participation in “getting ready”
Let them carry a bouquet or a small meaningful item
Invite them to help with your ceremony readings or rituals
Take lots and lots of candid family moments before and after the ceremony
Pick a special activity to include in your day that you already love doing as a family (canoeing, sailing, hiking, etc.)
These small touches make them feel included and create memories you’ll treasure forever.

Leave No Trace in Acadia
One of the reasons Acadia feels so magical is because it's still wild, so let’s all work together to keep it that way.
Acadia is unique in that it was created almost entirely from land donations by conservation-minded individuals, not via land grants from the government. As someone who is fortunate enough to live on Mount Desert Island and access Acadia almost daily, I feel immense responsibility to uphold those generous land donors’ intent and keep this beautiful land exactly as it is so people can continue to be awe-inspired by it for generations to come.
Practicing Leave No Trace is easy and I’ll help make sure your day abides by its principles:
Plan ahead and prepare
Travel and camp on durable surfaces
Dispose of waste properly
Leave what you find
Minimize campfire impacts
Respect wildlife
Be considerate to others
My hope is that your elopement here leaves you feeling connected not only to each other, but also to this incredible land, while helping ensure that it remains just as beautiful for the couples who come after you.
Your Acadia Elopement Should Feel Like You
One of the biggest misconceptions about eloping is that there’s a "right" way to do it. In actuality, though, the whole point of eloping is that you get to create a day that actually feels like you. That might mean hiking a mountain at sunrise and exchanging vows with no one else around. Or it could mean bringing your kids and closest family members and having a ceremony overlooking the ocean before heading into town for dinner. Or it could mean renting a sailboat, having a picnic on the rocks, canoeing on Eagle Lake, or grabbing lobster rolls and eating them at a quiet harbor. Or it could be a combo of all of those things!
One of my favorite parts of helping couples plan their Acadia elopements is encouraging them to think beyond the ceremony itself. Yes, you'll get married that day, but you'll also spend the day together. What do you want that experience to feel like? What activities do you enjoy doing together? What parts of Acadia are you most excited to experience?
The best elopement days are the ones that feel authentic to the people living them. You don't need to hike if you don't like hiking. You don't need to wake up at 3am for sunrise if you're not morning people. You don't need to leave your kids at home if having them there feels important to you.
Your elopement can be adventurous, laid-back, luxurious, family-centered, private, or a little bit of everything. That’s the beauty of eloping!
My role is to help you create a day that feels true to your relationship, your priorities, and the way you actually like to spend time together. Because years from now, the moments you'll treasure most won't be the ones that looked good on Instagram, they'll be the ones that genuinely felt like you.
